The Philosophy of Science

Excerpts from Carl Sagan’s classic work: The Demon-Haunted World. Upload a minimum 5-page, typed, double-spaced paper in accordance with the instructions below to this site. Use only .doc, .docx, or .pdf formats. To what extent do Sagan’s concerns regarding the “dumbing down of America” still apply today? Are Americans well-educated in science? Has fear of terrorism driven public discourse toward greater fanaticism, prejudice, superstition, pseudoscience, and an assault on personal rights and freedoms? Do you agree with Sagan’s use of the word “spirituality” as it relates to science? What does Sagan mean when he claims that science is a “self-correcting mechanism”? Look for examples from today’s headlines to illustrate issues raised by Sagan. Argue for or against Sagan’s notion of the relationship between science and democracy.
